Maths Open Evening at Tockwith School.

On Thursday 12th June at Tockwith school there was a maths open evening. The headmaster Mr. Reeve asked us to do a display on what we do in the 1st Marston Moor scout group, including all our sections; beaver scouts, cub scouts and scouts. I was one of the two people running the display with Owen. On the display there were lots of scouting equipment such as a survival bag, a day pack, a rucksack, sleeping bag and a tent in its bag. Plus we had some books on scouting, sailing, knot tying and other things we do in scouts.
Owen and Guy (two of our scouts) put together a slideshow presentation for the beavers, cubs and scouts Annual General Meeting. This was showing activities we have been doing over the year, such as a camp at Bramhope in which cubs did things like climbing, gladiator training, archery and an obstacle course. Lots of people enjoyed looking at this especially people who are in beavers, cubs or scouts. As well as the slideshow presentation there were lots of pictures of camps and weekly sessions. We hope the display looked as exciting as we find scouting.

Emergency Aid 3 Training

First Aid
Normal night at scouts, or so we thought....   We never really do much first aid, so it’s always nice to have a quick brush up on our skills. And for those who hadn’t covered it before; I hope it was worthwhile for them. We focused on three main topics: CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) (long words) Hypothermia (particularly useful for us) and Choking.
For CPR, we used specialised cardiopulmonary resuscitation dolls (try saying that 3 times fast) only called “Annie”. 30 compressions and 2 rescue breaths, sounds easy doesn’t it? That’s where you’re wrong. Even the strongest members of the troop found it hard going, and that’s really saying something. It’s all worth it though, this 15 minute session provided with all the knowledge needed to possibly save someone’s life.,
Hypothermia, probably the easiest to understand of the three, it’s what you might expect you would do to treat it. Hot liquids, blankets, other people, hot water bottles, exercise; the list of things to treat hypothermia could go much further. So if you were to choose which one you’d most likely want to experience over the others; hypothermia’s the one for you.
Choking is something we’ve all had experiences of and never really given it much thought. But its one of the biggest killers in the modern world... Did you know that 1 in 10 household deaths is due to choking? We certainly didn’t...  but we do now, otherwise I wouldn’t have just told you. It’s because of our lack of knowledge towards choking that makes it such a huge problem. One story we were told was about a young girl who suddenly started coughing during her school lunch, she couldn’t tell her teachers what was happening, but it wouldn’t have mattered because none of them had done any training for it! And by the time the medical services had arrived, the girl was already dead...
All in all, we all learnt a lot from this experience and came out more educated people than when we went in...

Scout Canoeing

Canoeing & Paddle Sports

My name is Matthew and one of my hobbies is canoeing.  I’m a member of the British Canoe Union and Canoe England.  I started canoeing with a friend in May 2013, he had already been canoeing for at least 4 years so I had a lot of catching up to do!
I paddle a k1 which is a type of canoe in the slalom family.

There are other types of canoe in this category;
A C1 has one paddler, a bigger boat with a one sided blade
A C2 has two paddlers with a massive boat, two smaller paddles
A K1, this is the boat that I paddle, has a smaller boat but you have got a duel bladed paddle and that’s all of the slalom family.

They also have divisions (called div for short) like football there are div 4, div 3, div 2, div 1 and premier first. I’m going to talk all about div 4.  If you have not been canoeing then you will be in this div you do, next on the line is div 3.  This is the div I’m in there are races that you earn points and there races that don’t get you points.  These are called open races and on the 15th of June 2014 I came 8th  in a race at Green Star Canoe Club hosted by Doncaster Scouts and got awarded first scout I hope you enjoyed reading my blog.

Testing The Waters - Literally.

On Sunday the 8th June, Strider, Luna, Treebeard and their families went on a Leaders Water Activity day at Ellerton Lakes, the Scout Water Centre.  We wanted to find out what activities were available for our Group.

We tried out Kayaking which was really fun

TreeBeard showed off his canoeing skills

Bob the rescue dog wanted to play all day and was a very good swimmer.

We all tried sailing.  Luna said "I've always wanted to have a go at Sailing.  It's a little scary when the boat leans right over but we had a good instructor"

Watch out Cubs for a possible Water Activities Day in the near future.  Sorry Beavers, you are not allowed to do Scouting Water Activities without your parents, so you will have to wait for the next Parent Beaver Activities day to earn your Water Activities Staged badges.

Moving up to Scouts.

I moved up to Scouts after Easter with my friends from cubs.  We were all ready to move up because there were lots of little ones in cubs and we had done lots of the activities already.
When I moved up to Scouts I realised I knew most of them because they had been in cubs and also my brother was there.  This made it much easier to settle in and I really like it now.
Since I’ve been there we’ve been allowed to go around the village a couple of times without leaders.  We weren’t allowed to do this in cubs and I really like the freedom I now have in scouts.
My favourite thing so far was when we did the alphabet game around the village and had to take lots of photos.
Last week we all got invested. Trevor made this really fun because we all got wrapped up in toilet roll so we looked like mummies.  We then had to do our promise dressed up like this. It was fun after when we could rip ourselves apart.
I am looking forward to all the other amazing things we will get to do such as camps and walks.

Beaver Parent Day at Ellerton Scout Activity Centre.

Today our beavers scouts went on a parent and beaver activity day run by North Yorshire Scouts. This gave Beavers a chance to try the opportunity to experience a variety of water, earth and field activities.

This is are report from Beaver Scout Harry. Thanks Harry, I hope you had a brilliant day.

This is what Harry wrote:

We made frying pans out of jam tart trays and a peg and melted chocolate on them.

The best thing on the day was canoeing.
